Prior to each investigation, I take all the Mini DV tapes that I expect we will use and organize them by opening up the package and labeling each tape with the investigation number and a sequence number. That ensures that tapes are used in order and not re-used by mistake. It also makes it easier to review the tapes in order. Organization during an investigation is key for the Tech Guy.
Here's another tip. Prior to an investigation my prep work also includes making sure all of our equipment has fresh batteries. I take out the old batteries, replace them with brand new ones. On the outside of the battery compartment I place a small piece of medical tape and write the date and my initials. This lets me know that everything is fresh and ready to go. Organization.
